Robertson Followup
Followup:http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=email_us&refer=latin_america&sid=aSW6_pgFqoyM So
now the previously confusing Pat Robertson is clarifying his statement. By "take
him out" he didn't mean necessarily assasination, just getting rid of the guy
somehow- like maybe kidnapping. That's so much better. Oh wait. You DID say the
word 'assassination" on national television. Oops. This fact aside... he's
saying that instead of shooting Chavez, we could just hold him captive for...
libal? Being a communist? OH! I've got it! He's an Enemy Combatant! Since we
have no proof that he's doing anything wrong (except charging competitive prices
for oil that is rightfully in his country's control)... we can just SAY we have
evidence there's something wrong going on under the patriot act, and we're
exonerated. Since, you know, there are no standards about what's right and wrong
except for U.S. Laws. That is, we're forbidden from killing him, but
imprisonment and torture are okay if he's a
threat. Maybe
he really regrets what he said and has no other way of taking it back... or
maybe he just doesn't get it at all. Is Chavez doing anything in specific to the
United States? He's threatening to not sell us stuff. This means war. At least
by my standards, we generally have no reason to go and mess with another
country- unless they're doing something gravely wrong to someone else, or
ourselves. Evidence he's doing something wrong to his people: none
that I can find. Please post if you do find some. So basically... there's no
normal, logical reason for us to have anything to do with Venezuela. If we
wanted them to stop being commies, we should offer them a ridiculous amount
of aid money for switching to democracy, or other political incentives for
continuing trade with the United States. Not that these plans work well, either,
but seriously- WHY?Cuba: "You are a
communist nation- HOW DARE YOU ATTEMPT TRADE WITH
US!"Venezuela: "You are a communist nation-
HOW DARE YOU THREATEN TO STOP SELLING US
OIL!"It seems this whole ordeal is just
proving one thing... Pat Robertson is insane. He seems to have absolutely no
grasp of the world situation, or what is good for the country. Not only does he
lack realistic solutions, he doesn't have the knowledge it would take to
construct good ones. And instead of being silent on the issue, he makes a bold
statement in front of everyone- one that even Mr. war himself, Donald Rumsfeld
won't even partially agree with. In other words, IGNORE THIS MAN! HE SPEAKS FOR
NO ONE! Or at least he shouldn't. The new international litmus test for
politics: "Do you agree with Pat Robertson, and actually think the U.S. should
remove Hugo Chavez from power in Venezuela?" If no: This person has some
bearings on reality- continue discussion. If yes: This person could not find the
sky unless it was in a Sunday school lesson at some point in time. Probably not
worth your time.
